Malaysia's e-Invoice rollout has changed twice, and most restaurant owners we speak to are unsure whether they need it yet. Here is the short version as of late 2026.
Who is exempt right now
In December 2025 the exemption threshold was raised to RM 1 million annual revenue, and the planned final phase for businesses between RM 500k and RM 1m was cancelled. If your outlet is under RM 1m a year, mandatory e-Invoicing does not apply yet.
What about RM 1m–5m?
That group's start date was deferred. If you are approaching the threshold, treat e-Invoice as a 2027 project rather than a 2026 one — but start collecting the data now.
What to prepare regardless
- Buyer details — for B2B customers, you will need TIN and registration details on the invoice;
- Item-level tax codes — your POS should store a tax code per item, not one tax rate for the whole bill;
- Consistent invoice numbering — gaps and duplicates are the most common validation errors;
- Exports — being able to export orders by date, with tax breakdown, saves days during the transition.
What it means for choosing a POS
Ask whether the vendor has an e-Invoice (MyInvois) integration roadmap, and whether historical orders can be exported in a structured format. A system that cannot produce item-level tax data will need manual work later.
Yekeep stores item-level data and exports orders by date; e-Invoice integration is on our roadmap. Talk to us at jamesyew1225@gmail.com if you are planning for 2027.
